Travel Notes: Exploring Fenghuang Ancient Town & Furong Town

Morning in Aizhai Village

The day began with a visit to Aizhai Village, a hidden gem in the heart of Hunan. Nestled among rolling green hills, this traditional Miao ethnic village felt like stepping back in time. The wooden stilt houses, layered terraced fields, and intricate handicrafts showcased the Miao people's deep connection to nature. Walking through the narrow paths, I admired the locals in their embroidered clothing, going about their daily lives—some weaving, others drying crops under the sun. The peaceful atmosphere and misty mountain views made it a perfect start to the day.

Noon: Miao Long Banquet Feast
By midday, I joined a lively Miao Long Banquet—a tradition where dozens of tables are lined up to form one long feast. The aroma of smoked meats, spicy pickled vegetables, and sticky rice filled the air. As I sat among friendly locals, they greeted me with homemade rice wine and cheerful toasts. Between bites of savory sour fish soup and fragrant bamboo rice, Miao girls in silver headdresses performed folk songs, their voices echoing under the wooden pavilion. It wasn’t just a meal; it was a celebration of community and culture.

Afternoon in Furong Town
In the afternoon, I arrived at Furong Town, famously known as the "Waterfall Town." The moment I entered, the thunderous sound of the waterfall cascading over ancient rooftops took my breath away. Wandering through the cobbled streets, I passed old Tujia-style wooden houses built along the cliffs, their balconies draped with red lanterns. The highlight was crossing the misty walkway behind the waterfall—feeling the spray on my face while gazing at the town through a curtain of water. As dusk fell, the golden glow of lights on the waterfall turned the scene into something straight out of a fairy tale.

From Aizhai’s rustic charm to Furong’s dramatic beauty, this journey was a mesmerizing blend of nature and ethnic culture. The Miao people’s warmth, the unforgettable Long Banquet, and the magical waterfall town left me with memories as vivid as the landscapes themselves. If you seek authenticity and awe-inspiring sights, this corner of Hunan is a must-visit.
