Preparations for the "Millennial Brilliance · Prosperous Dunhuang" 2026 Dunhuang Lantern Festival have been largely completed. This lantern festival, which carries the memories of the Tang Dynasty's golden age and the cultural heritage of Dunhuang, will officially light up on the evening of December 31. It is set to offer a captivating cultural feast for visitors from both China and abroad.
On the afternoon of December 29, a reporter observed at the festival's core area, the Dunhuang Night Market, that over 1,000 lanterns—blending Dunhuang characteristics with Silk Road charm—had already been assembled. Lanterns bearing Dunhuang's cultural essence are gradually taking shape, sketching out a dazzling street scene in advance. Although the official lighting has yet to begin, the site has already attracted many citizens and tourists who came for a sneak peek and to take photos.
Everyone is eagerly looking forward to gathering at the Dunhuang Night Market on the evening of December 31. Together, they will witness the illumination of the splendid lanterns, engage in a dialogue with millennia-old civilization amidst the radiant lights, and feel the warmth of festive life within the lively atmosphere.
Resident Zhang Yimeng said: "I came to see the lanterns with my grandma today, and I think they are exceptionally beautiful. The New Year coincides with my birthday, and my parents will bring me to see the lanterns. I am very happy and really look forward to this lantern festival."
Resident Ms. Xu shared: "This lantern display is exceptionally beautiful. Even though it's daytime now and the lights aren't on yet, the streets are bustling with people, and it already feels like the festive New Year atmosphere. It's wonderful. I'm really looking forward to the evening of the 31st when the lanterns light up and to the interactive sessions with the NPCs. I also hope everyone comes to check out this street—it’s sure to be a truly unforgettable night."
